Bass Reeves was born into slavery, escaped to freedom during the Civil War and became a legendary marshal.
St. Clement's Episcopal Mission was organized in Vaiden, Mississippi in 1859. There were plans in place to build the church in 1860 but construction was delayed due to fears of war. The Civil War and an outbreak of yellow fever afterwards delayed construction until 1876.
